<text>AFTM MINUTES – 12:30 p.m., February 10, 2013
Tom’s Tabooley
1. Call to Order
2. Approve Minutes - Minutes were approved.
3. Financial Report –
CD – Regarding Mid-Winter fest, 25% of sales from Silent Auction were made on credit card.
Suggestion: Make the “Senior” price for non-members the same as the Member price ($15).
Member price currently higher than senior price and the member should get the best advantage.
AW – I don’t think we need a senior price.
No decision made at this meeting.
$2,672 net for MWF (will change slightly as more receipts submitted for reimbursement).
Total profit: $600 better than MWF2012.
4. Midwinter Festival Changes for next year?
a. Bands – AW – Suggests workshops all morning, have an open mic going simultaneously on
stage, and start the stage “show” at 7 pm with 4 bands. Allowing more participation of attendees.
People love workshops. Also likes the idea of a dance.
JD – Had better attendance in the early part of the day than ever before.
b. Food – TW – Overbought on food, can tighten up for next year.
CD – profit about $200 (net over $400 in 2012)
c. Merchandise – CD – Did not have very good sales for band merchandise.
CD – Important to train folks on how to use the “square” technology for CC purchases.
d. Workshops – JD - We had over 100 people attending all the workshops.
e. Volunteers – CF – Need to identify a coordinator earlier next year.
f. Other - AW, might help to have a sandwich board on the street to advertise, as well as jam
going on out front.
TW – Next year – Venue for MWF is unknown. Discussed various venues including the Unitarian
Church on Grover St. They have classrooms for workshops and plenty of parking, great acoustics.
Also expensive. Grants or sponsorships could off-set expense.
AW – Need new members to form a committee for 2014 Mid-Winter Festival.
AW – Suggested a multi-cultural dance day – Possible fundraiser for future.
BD – Parking always a problem, even with the Elks Club parking availability. Difficult to
impossible for older folks and handicapped to climb the hill to Elks Lodge.
(CF NOTE: Comment on photographer volunteer position at MWF – Spoke to Tom Delaney,
MWF2013 photographer, 3/4/13 and he suggests next time we split the day up between at least 2
people for this position. I agree with this.)
5. Open Mic – Need Hosts
CF – Discussed and decided we do want to continue the Open Mics for 2013. March (SXSW and
St Patrick’s Day) and October (ASBF weekend) Open Mics will be cancelled.
RB, T&A Wooten, D&C Foster, Molly Johnson will host. CF Will coordinate with Dave Polacheck
and send out 2013 schedule to board.
6. Nominations.
Several folks asked. No confirmations yet. Publicity position most needed on board.
AW – Be more specific on where we need help when recruiting. Don’t necessarily need to be “on
board”, could use some folks on subcommittees. CD – Renee Hopkins willing to help, but not

wanting to be on board. Marketing is her forte. Mike Savercool is the only nominee to date. Will
vote on next board meeting. Our by-laws state we need to send out a slate of nominees to
membership so that they are allowed to vote at next board meeting.
ACTION ITEM : An email with slate to be sent out prior to March board meeting.
TW asked Robin to do this.
Board agreed to take further nominations in the next month via email.
7. Music scholarships CF - We have two applicants Bren Koch (recipient last year) and Joshua
Logan Moore. Board voted and approved of Joshua Logan Moore as recipient of this year’s grant.
Board agreed to extend application submissions to March 8, 2013 as well.
8. Begin ASBF planning
JD – Poppin Jenny (have opened negotiations), Portland, OR, $2000 + airfare ($1000 appx).
Interest in Tim Ericson, Pennsylvania? (Shape Note singing),
Bayou Seco (not sure of health status) and Paul Brown’s band. Will forego expensive bands on
Friday night.
BD – Suggests less expensive bands in early afternoon at ASBF. Have more local bands.
9. Pending business: (NOT DISCUSSED! We run out of time every meeting).
a. policy and procedures manual
b. Do we want to purchase Directors and Officers insurance ($1 million coverage for $804)?
Other business? CD – Requests that we have Howard Rains put together the ¼ page “save the date”
flyers for ASBF.

                    <text>AFTM MINUTES – 12:30 p.m., March 10, 2013
Tom’s Tabooley
1. Call to Order
2. Approve Minutes - Minutes were approved.
3. Financial Report and storage room discussion.
CD – Financial reports were sent to board prior to meeting. Bottom line, more money raised at
MWF in 2013 than in 2012. Recommendation for 2014 – do not sell Senior tickets at lower rate
than member tickets at MWF. Many members unhappy about this. Table managers have authority
to use discretion at the door if situations arise. Financial report approved by the board.
AW – Regarding stored kitchen items: Easier to store at the Wooten house. Storage unit location is
out of the way and expensive to keep all year round. Board discussed and approved terminating the
current storage unit agreement.
4. Board election – The slate is all current board members plus Kenny Tweedy (who can start in
May) and Mike Savercool. Approval of current slate accomplished.
AW – Suggests he be responsible for publicity or volunteer committee. This needs to be discussed
with Kenny.
JD – Recommends that Christy F. be in charge for ASBF 2013.
5. Music scholarships – One applicant, Joshua Logan Moore has been approved as recipient for
2013. JD will be responsible for handling notification to recipient and working with Swannanoa on
registration, sending check, etc.. (NOTE: Board decided to award a 2nd recipient, Isaiah (Howard
Rains’ son) after discovering that the applicant’s email had been turned into the AFTM webmail
before the scholarship deadline. Webmaster was out of town at the time and board was not
informed until after the deadline and March meeting)
6. ASBF discussion – J.DeFriese
Paul Brown Band, (his wife and band member teaches banjo and uke), $1500-$3000 estimate.
Hoppin Jenny, $2000 +
Bayou Seco - Willing to cut this band depending on budget for Paul Brown and Hoppin’ Jenny.
Board gave approval for JD to ask and negotiate with the above three bands to play.
Local bands (to be paid $350 each) – Charles Thibadeaux for Friday night, possible. Papermoon
Shiners, Barn Owls, Los Pinky’s, Austin Steamers, Matt Downing’s new band, Dan and Christy
Foster….all possible, not confirmed yet. Send suggestions for mini-sets. 14 bands.
BD – Mickey Slough from Fredericksburg, dulcimer player may be interested
JD – Need to move the admissions gate so that volunteers can hear the music.
Vendor’s limitation, location and power a problem. May be possible to run extension cords to
concrete table area in front of pavilion for vendors. Also, would like to have more children’s
activities during the day.
CF – Suggested the Hey Lollies for kids as a stage band, JD – Will explore the Biscuit Brothers.
CF – Hilka from KOOP’s “Andean Hour” radio program has been applying for grants from the City
Arts Commission. Interested in collaborating with AFTM in future.
AW – Mary Briggs (Ellen Stansell’s mother) may be willing to help us in writing grants. We
should talk to her about this.
TW – Budget of $10,000 for bands. Budget sent via email prior to this meeting.

JD – Trent Sheperd will put together ad for Old Time Herald, as well as poster, t-shirt design, etc.
7. Ricegrass – AFTM will help Louie Bond with advertising through Facebook, Yahoo group,
website to promote Ricegrass festival as requested
8. House Concerts & Central Market Concerts – If we can find a volunteer with a house big enough,
centrally located with adequate parking. Genevieve Kent’s mother has a house with a possible
“outside” concert space. AFTM usually contributes $200 per house concert to pay the band.
9. Pending business:
a. policy and procedures manual
TW – More interested in a “cheat sheet” pocket, frequently asked questions for the String Band
Festival.
ACTION: We all need to jot down what each of us do and coordinate with Jeanne.
JD will put together what she already has and send it to the board.
b. Do we want to purchase Directors and Officers insurance ($1 million coverage for $804)?
Board decided to NOT purchase the Directors/Officers insurance.
Other business? JD – Would like to revisit “no dogs policy” at ASBF. Tim said he would put on
next meeting agenda.

1. Call to Order
2. Approve Minutes - Minutes were approved.
3. Financial Report – CD - $1434 sent off to Swannanoah for two scholarship recipients, otherwise
little activity. Reports sent out via email prior to April meeting.
CF – IBM matching donation (via Dave Obermann) has not been received. Will look into this.
Financial report approved by board.
4. ASBF discussion – JD
. Still waiting on expense estimate from Paul Brown. Hoping to work with Blackpot Festival to
help share expenses.
. Purly Gates – enquiry for children’s activity at ASBF. Storytelling and music, kids make
instruments and then do a little performance on stage. One of first acts on stage on Saturday.
. Biscuit Brothers on TCA touring schedule. Possible grant money may be available to cover part of
their costs.
. Wait on asking jugglers for ASBF.
CD – Should expand sponsorships. Suggest finding sponsors “for” children’s activities, after we
obtain cost for children events. Send suggestions to Barbara Deane for updates to Sponsor Form..
CF – Kevin Tweedy, new board member – possible volunteer coordinator? See if Maggie Valenti
will help train whoever becomes Volunteer Coordinator.
5. House Concerts & Central Market Concerts
CD – Suggests posting a notice on Yahoo group to ask if anyone would like to donate their house
for a future house concert.
AW – Zilker Park rental (ampitheater) possible?
Other ideas: Darren Appelt, Joane Rylander’s backyard, Steve Dean’s dance halls (out of town),
Round Mountain Community Center near CD’s house (Cedar Park?),
JD – Suggestions for dance events – Moose Lodge, CF – Senior Center (29th & Lamar)
6. Dog Policy discussion – Board discussed and approved a “no dog policy” for the Austin String
Band Festival. Board has power to use discretion if an attendee accidentally brings a dog, asking
them to “keep it out of sight”. If not complying, a Board member can ask attendee to leave.
JD – Board needs to communicate with each other when a dog is sighted.
BD – Need to publicize more and sooner than in the past.
TW – When purchasing ticket, make the “no dogs policy” clear on website.
ACTION: Ask Sharon I. to add no dog policy to AFTM website and add a list of links to
kennels nearby.
7. Pending business:
a. Frequently asked questions (and answers)
CD – First question, what is AFTM responsible for on grounds of Camp Ben McCulloch?
TW – ASBF is done at noon on Sunday. Prior to festival, Camp Ben official, Johnny Hudson and
TW will drive around and view festival grounds. Inspection with Johnny Hudson and TW will
occur at noon on Sunday.
BD – Need handouts of google maps to Seton Southwest Hospital. Red emergency folders have
this info (gate, merch booth and kitchen is where RED emergency folders reside)

ACTION: Each board member come up with questions, send to Tim Wooten to be compiled
in a pocket booklet for future ASBF festival.
DF – Volunteered to put a web application together to compile questions. Google link to
emergency info to be included in FAQs. ACTION: Dan will compile to web location after
questions collected.
Other business? CF – Suggestion: CafePress.com is an online vendor that can generate our t-shirts
on an individual basis when we sell out of our inventory. We will still make a set amount of t-shirts
for ASBF, but can cut back on quantity, freeing up merchandise storage from year to year. We
choose which shirts, styles, coffee mugs, etc. for the “AFTM store”. AFTM would get a percentage
per item. Person wanting to buy shirt has choice of color, style of shirt, etc. Change design slightly
to differentiate from original design. See Wolf’s website for example:
http://www.cafepress.com/banjohazard
ACTION: Christy Foster will look into further details and get back to board.

somebody at KUT? DF – Suggested talking with Paul Brown about contacting KUT.
ACTION: CF – Will contact Jay Trachtenberg at KUT to find the name and contact info.

selling and/or contributing to food at festival? Board agreed this is a good idea.
ACTION: JD – Will contact Sarah about this.
5. Flipnotics has a new acoustic series, to play 2-4 pm on Sunday afternoons. AFTM showcase?
ACTION: CF - Need to get more details, Board is interested.
6. Any news on the availability of a house for house concerts?

like to host. AFTM will chip in funds to contribute to house concert for food/drink/$ to band. Have
underwritten $200 per house concert in the past.
ACTION: TW – Volunteered to craft a letter to send out to membership/yahoo list. Will ask

ACTION: JD will check into where the Shape Note singing takes place (Hyde Parke), to find
out what the rental fee would be.
7. IBM application – CF More paperwork received from IBM regarding the David Obermann

Tom’s Tabooley
1. Call to Order by Dan Foster (Tim and Angie Wooten were not able to attend)
2. Approve Minutes - Minutes were approved.
3. Financial Report – CD - Membership dues are down. Only 2 from May and June this year. Due
to lack of events (no house concerts, etc.) Need to send reminders out.
MS – Last membership email-out for house concert, many emails bounced back. Will run a sort and
find the expired and send letter out to those that need to renew. ACTION ITEM
4. ASBF discussion
JD – Will start stage shows at 1 pm and no supper break this year. Have not heard back from Austin
Outhouse or Pink Sound yet.
Discussion about getting radio air-time. CF - KUT contact, Peter Babb, to set up possible interview
with Paul Brown ahead of festival. Will also contact KOOP for Friday morning live appearance on
Ms. Pearl’s General Store. Week of festival is pledge week on KUT and weeks before that, Austin
City Limits promotion will take precedent.
CD – Any suggestions on how to designate campers? Stretch tape – neon various colors. Camp
Ben uses a certain color that we should NOT use. Camper or tent needs to have this tag on, not car
dashboard.
JD – Neon colored plastic ties? Will go to Home Depot and investigate.
CD – Numbered tickets this year to keep better track of how many camping stickers were sold.
CD – RE: Moving admission gate table closer in, so volunteers don’t miss the whole stage show?
Still need to figure this out. Electricity at that location a factor.
JD – Shut gate down at 8 pm and leave a sign for folks to come to merch booth to pay?
DF – Would it be possible to hire someone that’s trustworthy to sit at gate after 8 pm?
5. Next Flipnotics showcase?
Aug. 6 – Missing Parts and a replacement band for Blue Buckskin Winchers (had to cancel).
JD – Suggests we have past AFTM newsletters at Showcases to hand out. Need to reprint.
ACTION ITEM
6. Any update on this?: Evan Leslie, Butler School of Music at the University of Texas asked for
our help in the Spring of 2014, to present a bluegrass concert featuring fiddling in association with
the Yehudi Menhuin Competition for Young Violinists.
DF – No updates – Sent a long email to Mr. Leslie, have not heard back.
7. CF – Dr. Gary Hartmann’s TX Music History Journal, next issue out Nov 1, 2013. Too late to be
considered for an AFTM article or ad this time. Gary has offered to bring some past issues out to
ASBF for merch booth.
8. CF - Pioneer Farms is interested in AFTM having the Mid-Winter Festival at the farms. DF and
CF spoke to Mike and Steve on the board of Pioneer Farms briefly. JD and CD also visited after
this board meeting and pointed out several drawbacks for moving MWF for 2014. Namely, no
electricity to small buildings (maybe no heat either?) for workshops. Dance hall very nice for a
dance, but not so good for a performance setting. No kitchen, to sell food and drink. CF/DF will
get back to Pioneer Farms when Mike returns from vacation. ACTION ITEM
9. CF – Nancy Fly asked AFTM to co-host last 3 Sundays in August at Antone's providing an
opening act at 7pm to go on before Los Texmaniacs. Our name and logo should be listed on the
Antone’s website as co-hosts and we will, in turn, post to the AFTM website. It was decided that

we will provide band names to Nancy Fly and she will take care of the rest.

OCTOBER 2013

VOL 38 • NO. 2

Austin String Band Festival Is Rapidly Approaching!
Austin Friends of Traditional Music is hosting our eight annual string band festival October 18, 19, and 20 at
Camp Ben McCulloch across from the Salt Lick (directions below). As usual we'll have impressive bands, fun
jams, good food, vendors and first-rate workshops at this beautiful campground with shade trees, a creek, and
all the facilities for a delightful time. Gates open at noon on Friday, October 18th.
A bit of History: The term "old-time" With its origins in traditional music of Europe and Africa, old-time
music represents perhaps the oldest form of North American traditional music other than Native American
music, and thus the term "old-time" is an appropriate one. As a label, however, it dates back only to 1923.
Fiddlin' John Carson made some of the first commercial recordings of traditional American country music
for the Okeh label. These recordings became hits. Okeh, which had previously coined the terms "hillbilly
music" to describe Appalachian and Southern fiddle-based and religious music and "race recording" to describe
the music of black recording artists, began using "old-time music" as a term to describe the music made by
artists of Carson's style. The term, thus, originated as a euphemism, but proved a suitable replacement for
other terms that were considered disparaging by many inhabitants of these regions. It remains the term
preferred by performers and listeners of the music. It is sometimes referred to as "old-timey" or "mountain
music" by long-time practitioners.
By the early 19th century, the banjo (an instrument of West African origin originally played only by people
of African descent, both enslaved and free had become an essential partner to the fiddle, particularly in the
southern United States. The banjo, originally a fretless instrument and frequently made from a gourd, played
the same melody as the fiddle (though in a lower register), while simultaneously providing a rhythmic accompaniment incorporating a high drone provided by the instrument's short "drone string." The banjo used in oldtime music is typically a 5-string model with an open back (i.e., without the resonator found on most bluegrass
banjos).
Today old-time banjo players most commonly utilize the clawhammer style, but there were originally
several other styles, most of which are still in use, loosely grouped by region. The major styles were
clawhammer (which also went by a number of regional names), two-finger index lead (also called "North
Carolina picking"), two-finger thumb lead (Kentucky and East Tennessee), and a three-finger "fiddle style"
that seems to have been influenced in part by late-19th century urban classical style. Generally, a young player
would learn whatever style a parent or older sibling favored. This style of having a fiddle play the lead melody
and a banjo play a rhythmic accompaniment is the most basic form of Appalachian old-time music, and is the
instrumentation most Appalachian old-time musicians consider to be "classic."

Hoppin' Jenny
Hopping Jenny brings together current and
former members of the Macrae Sisters and
Foghorn Stringband. Fiddler and banjo player
Sophie Vitells Enloe and Gabrielle Macrae, have
been playing music together for over ten years.
Their long history of shared musicianship is
reflected in their tightly locked playing and
effortless harmony singing. Sophie and Gabrielle
are joined in Hopping Jenny by the driving
rhythmic force of Kevin Sandri on guitar and
Brian Bagdonas on bass.
Brad Leftwich and Linda Higginbotham
Brad Leftwich is a prominent American old-time
fiddle and banjo player and teacher. He is
originally from Oklahoma. Leftwich was a
founding member of the Plank Road String Band
in the mid-1970s. He has recorded for the
Rounder, County, Copper Creek, and Marimac
labels. He has written a book on the Round Peak
clawhammer banjo style that is published by Mel
Bay, and has released two old-time fiddle instructional videos. Leftwich is joined by his wife Linda
Higginbotham on banjo-uke, guitar and vocals.
Carper Family
The Carper Family is a family band like no other,
spinning out the effortless harmonies of a bornfamily with the range and diversity of a madefamily... Whatever the bloodline, the music hits
the ear with both depth and simplicity, capturing
the essence of true country music. The Austinbased trio of Melissa Carper [upright bass], Beth
Chrisman [fiddle], and Jenn Miori [guitar] applies
their signature, stunning three-part harmonies to
bluegrass, old-time, country and swing tunes of
the standard and original variety, pushing and

mambo and country two-step.
The Barn Owls
The Barn Owls play Old-Time music from the
Appalachian region of the US, circa late 1800's
and early 1900's. These fiddle-based tunes were
heavy influences on the bluegrass, folk and acoustic scene of the mid-1900's. The tunes were often
the backbone of a community square dance, where
a 'stringband' would provide the music for a dance
caller to coach the to and fro. Additionally, the
tunes lived and breathed in the remote areas of the
Eastern United States and were passed down
through generations by ear, before recording
technology existed.
Christy and the Plowboys
Christy and the Plowboys play old-time, country,
bluegrass and hillbilly music for your enjoyment
here in our home town of Austin, Texas - and
wherever music lovers enjoy old sentimental songs,
new sentimental songs, snappy rags, crooked

home while also exploring other American regional

Mexico, often used in the context of political
organizing and social justice causes in Mexico and
the US. It draws on the traditions of the converging
cultures in Veracruz: African, Spanish, and Indigenous. We will move through the basic chords and
rhythms of the 2 major instruments of the Son
Jarocho fandango, the jarana (strings) and the
tarima (percussion).

Phil McDonald, old time fiddler
known and admired by many in
this area, passed away October
2, 2013. He was in his early 60's
and is survived by his wife Annie
McDonald of Dripping Springs.
Phil loved all the roots and
branches of traditional music,
was at home playing old time
style, bluegrass, western swing,

playing in fiddle contests.
For years he played with his
many friends around Wimberley,
and the monthly music jam at
Pearl, TX. He brought a fine
focus of energy and joy as he
spun out the old time tunes, and
made them his own. Phil played
like he meant it, he will be
missed.

HERE IS WHERE WE MAKE FUN OF OURSELVES!!!
FROM THE PUBLICATION BLUEGRASS NATION.
The Music
Old Time and Celtic songs
are about whiskey, food and
struggle. Bluegrass songs are
about God, mother and the girl
who did me wrong. If the girl isn't
dead by the third verse, it ain't
Bluegrass. If everyone dies, it's
Celtic.
Old Time and Celtic bands
have nonsense names like
"Flogging Molly', "Fruit Jar
Drinkers' and "Skillet Lickers"
while Bluegrass bands have
serious gender-specific name like
"Bluegrass Boys,' "Clinch Mountain Boys' and "Backwoods
Babes."
The most common Old Time
keys are major and minor with
only 5 notes (modal). Bluegrass
uses these, plus Mixolydian and
Dorian modes, and a Celtic band
adds Lydian and Phrygian modes.
A Bluegrass band has
between 1 and 3 singers who are
all singing about an octave above
their natural vocal range. Some
Old Time and Celtic bands have
no singers at all. If a Celtic band
has a singer, it is usually either a
bewhiskered ex-sailor, or a petite
soprano. A Bluegrass band has a
vocal arranger who arranges
three-part harmonies. In an Old
Time band, anyone who feels like
it can sing or make comments
during the performance.
In a Celtic band, anyone who
speaks during a performance gets
"the look', and songs are preceded
by a call for silence and a detailed
explanation of their cultural
significance. Bluegrass tunes &
songs last 3 minutes. Old Time
and Celtic tunes & songs can be
any length, and sometimes last all
night.

The Instruments
Banjo
A Celtic banjo is small and
quiet. An Old Time banjo is openbacked, with an old towel (probably never washed) stuffed in the
back to dampen sound. A Bluegrass banjo has bell bronze
mastertone ring and a resonator
to make it louder.
A Celtic banjo weighs 4
pounds, an Old Time banjo weighs
5 pounds, towel included and a
Bluegrass banjo weighs 40
pounds. A Celtic banjo has only 4
strings. A Bluegrass banjo has
five strings and needs 24 frets.
An Old Time banjo needs no
more than 5 frets, and some don't
need any. A Bluegrass banjo
player has had spinal fusion
surgery on all his vertebrae, and
therefore stands very straight. If
an Old Time banjo player stands,
he slouches. A Celtic banjo player
has a brace to relieve his carpal
tunnel syndrome and remains
seated to maintain stability while
cross-picking as fast as possible
after several pints. An Old Time
banjo player can lose 3 right-hand
fingers and 2 left-hand fingers in
an industrial accident without
affecting his performance. A
Celtic banjo player flat picks
everything. A Bluegrass banjo
player puts jewelry on his fingertips to play. An Old Time banjo
player puts super glue on his
fingernails to strengthen them.
Never shake hands with an Old
Time banjo player while he's
fussing with his nails.
Fiddle
The Bluegrass fiddler paid
$10,000 for his fiddle at the Violin
Shop in Nashville. The Celtic

fiddler inherited his fiddle from his
mothers 2nd cousin in County
Clare. The Old Time fiddler got
theirs for $15 at a yard sale.
Celtic and Bluegrass fiddles are
tuned GDAE. An Old Time fiddle
can be in a hundred different
tunings. Old Time fiddlers seldom
use more than two fingers of their
left hand, and use tunings that
maximize the number of open
strings played. Celtic and Bluegrass fiddlers study 7th position
fingering patterns with Isaac
Stern, and take pride in never
playing an open string. An Old
Time fiddle player can make dogs
howl & incapacitate people
suffering from sciatic nerve
damage. An Old Time fiddle
player only uses 1/8 of his bow.
The rest is just there for show.
Guitar
An Old Time guitarist knows
the major chords in G and C, and
owns a capo for A and D. A
Bluegrass guitarist can play in Eflat without a capo. The fanciest
chord an Old Time guitarist needs
is an A to insert between the G
and the D7 chord. A Bluegrass or
Celtic guitarist needs to know
C#aug+7-4. A Celtic guitarist
keeps his picks in his pocket. Old
Time guitarists stash extra picks
under a rubber band around the
top of the peg head. Bluegrass
guitarists would never cover any
part of the peg head that might
obscure the gilded label of their
$3,000 guitar.
Mandolin
It's possible to have an Old
Time or Celtic band without a
mandolin. However, it is impossible to have a true Bluegrass
band without one. Mandolin
players spend half their time
tuning their mandolin and the
other half of their time playing

their mandolin out of tune. Old
Time and Celtic mandolin players
use "A' model instruments (pearshaped) by obscure makers.
Bluegrass mandolin players use
"F' model Gibson that cost $100
per decibel.
Bass
A Celtic band never has a
bass, while a Bluegrass band
always has a bass. An old, Old
Time band doesn't have a bass,
but new time Old Time bands
seem to need one for reasons that
are unclear. A Bluegrass bass
starts playing with the band on the
first note. An Old Time bass, if
present, starts sometime after the
rest of the band has run through
the tune once depending on the
player's blood alcohol content. A
Bluegrass bass is polished and
shiny. An Old Time bass is often
used as yard furniture.
Other Instruments
It is not possible to have a
Celtic band without a tin whistle
or Bodhran (hand drum) if not
several, usually too many of each.
Old Time and Bluegrass bands
never have either. A Bluegrass
band might have a Dobro. An Old
Time band might have anything
that makes noise including: a
tambourine, jaw harp, didgeridoo,
harmonica, conga, wash tub bass,
miscellaneous rattles &shakers, a
1-gallon jug (empty), or a lap
(mountain) dulcimer or a hammered dulcimer. In a Celtic band,
it's the musicians that are hammered.
Instrumentation
Except for the guitar, all the
instruments in a Celtic band play
the melody all the time. In an Old
Time band, anyone can play either
melody or accompaniment at any
time. In Bluegrass bands, one

instrument at a time solos, and
every else plays accompaniment.
Bluegrass bands have carefully
mapped-out choreography due to
the need for solo breaks. If Old
Time and Celtic band members
move around, they tend to run into
each other. Because of this
problem (and whiskey) Old Time
and Celtic often sit down when
performing, while a Bluegrass
band always stands. Because
they're sitting, Old Time and
Celtic bands have the stamina to
play the same tune for 20 minutes
for a square or contra dance. The
audience claps after each Bluegrass solo break. If anyone talks
or claps near an Old Time or
Celtic band, it confuses them,
even after the tune is over.
Personalities and Stage Presence
Bluegrass band members
wear uniforms, such as blue
polyester suits with gray Stetson
hats. Old Time bands wear jeans,
sandals, work shirts and caps
from seed companies. Celtic
bands wear tour tee-shirts with
plaid touring caps. All this head
wear covers bald spots. Women
in Bluegrass bands have big hair
and Kevlar undergarments.
Women in Old Time bands jiggle
nicely under their overalls. There
are no Women in Celtic bands,
only Lassies with long skirts and
lacy, high collars and Wenches in
apple-dumplings-on-a-shelf
bodices and leather mini-skirts. A
Bluegrass band tells terrible jokes
while tuning. An Old Time band
tells terrible jokes without bothering to tune. Bluegrass band
members never smile. Old Time
band members will smile if you
give them a drink. A Celtic band
is too busy drinking to smile, tune
or tell jokes. Celtic musicians eat
fish and chips, Bluegrass musi-

cians eat barbecue ribs, and Old
Time musicians eat tofu and miso
soup. Bluegrass musicians have
mild high frequency hearing loss
from standing near the banjo
player. Old Time musicians have
moderate high frequency hearing
loss from sitting near the fiddler.
Celtic musicians have advanced
hearing loss from playing in small
pubs with all those fiddles, banjos,
tin whistles and bodhrans.
Festivals and Transportation
A Celtic band travels in an
actual Greyhound bus with
marginal air conditioning and then
catches a ride from the bus stop
to the festival any way they can.
A Bluegrass band travels in an old
converted Greyhound bus that
idles in the parking lot all weekend with the air conditioner
running full blast, fumigating the
county with diesel exhaust. An
Old Time band travels in a rustedout 1965 VW microbus that blows
an engine in North Nowhere,
Nebraska. They don't have an
Easy-Up, and it's pretty evident
that their vehicles don't have air
conditioning. Bluegrass players
stay on the bus and Celtic musicians stay at the nearest Motel 6,
while Old Time musicians camp in
the parking lot. The Celtic Band
has their name on their instrument
cases and a banner for their
Easy-Up. The bluegrass band's
name and Inspirational Statement
are painted on both the side and
front of the bus in script lettering.
Bluegrass bumper stickers are in
red, white and blue and have stars
and/or stripes on them. Celtic
bumper stickers display fancy
knotwork borders, banners, and
slogans from the old country. Old
Time bumper stickers don't make
any sense ("Gid is My Co-Pilot').

Tuesday, October 8th at 8 p.m.

AFTM to host a very special musical experience featuring author,
musician, and 2013-Grammy nominee Stephen Wade
For one night only Stephen
Wade will explore through live
music-making, projected images,
and his wonderful narrative the
stories behind The Beautiful
Music All Around Us: Field
Recordings and the American
Experience (University of Illinois
Press, 2012). Wade's landmark
book explores thirteen iconic
folksong performances captured
on Library of Congress field
recordings between 1934 and
1942. In this compellingly narrated, multimedia, musical performance, Wade threads the music
with its largely unknown yet
surprisingly influential creators. A
book signing follows the performance.
Stephen Wade grew up in
Chicago, where, as a youngster
exposed to a number of musicians
who hailed from the Mississippi
Delta and the Southern Appalachians, he developed a passion for
traditional music and American
folklore. In the early 1970s,
inspired by the legendary Library
of Congress series of folk music
field recordings, Wade began
travelling to the communities
where these recordings originated, seeking out surviving

musicians and immersing himself
in their surroundings. That contact
led to his first stage show, Banjo
Dancing, which opened in Chicago in May 1979. It ran sold-out
for thirteen months, and merited
national attention, including an
invited performance at the White
House. In January 1981, he came
to Washington, D.C.'s Arena
Stage, where his engagement,
initially booked for three weeks,
extended into a ten-year run. In
1989, On the Way Home, Wade's
second critically acclaimed
production, opened at Arena.

Following those runs, he toured
both shows nationally including
repeat engagements in Dallas, Ft.
Worth, and Austin. In 1994 he
also launched in Texas his work
on the book, a research process
that extended over the next
eighteen years. In the wake of its
publication in September 2012, he
has been named 2013-2014
Resident Artist/Scholar at George
Washington University, as well as
2013 George A. Miller Visiting
Scholar, Center for Advanced
Study, University of Illinois.
Wade's essays, reviews, and
articles have appeared in numerous publications. He also edited
and annotated the Rounder CD
collection that gave rise to this
book, A Tr easur y of Libr ar y of
Congr ess Field Recor dings.
Since 1996 his occasional commentaries on folksongs and
traditional tunes have appeared on
National Public Radio's All Things
Considered and Morning Edition.
He has recorded and/or produced
over a dozen albums, the most
recent of which is the 2013
Grammy-nominated Banjo Diary:
Lessons from Tradition.

Tom’s Tabooley

2. Approve Minutes Minutes were approved by the board.
3. Financial Report - Report approved by board.
4. ASBF discussion.
a. Discussion with Johnny Hudson (Camp Ben Commander).

yet.
CD - $500 damage deposit, in addition to the $500 deposit according to Crystal at Camp Ben. New

b. Publicity and advertising
CF – CF and DF met with Clay DaFoe, KDRP, to arrange for 26 on-air announcements, website
blurb and facebook promotion. Decision made by Tim Wooten to proceed ($390) without Board
approval because of time factor. Hopping Jenny will appear on KOOP radio on Oct. 18. CF will
be on Kim Simpson’s International Folk Bazaar show on KOOP on Thursday, Oct. 17. Local TV
and radio calendars as well as local newspapers (Statesmen, Chronicle, Oakhill Gazette) all sent
press releases. Thanks to Louie Bond for her help with putting the ASBF press releases together.
c. Status Reports on Areas of Responsibility: Volunteers, KT need more volunteers for food and
Friday night merch book. Will offer weekend pass for volunteers willing to work Friday night.
Decision made to make badges for staff only and KT will handle.
EP - Having badges for performers in the past, facilitated handling for cash transactions between
performers and volunteers. CD – Hope to have a board member present at all times for these
transactions. WiFI hotspots set up for IPads, Iphones, via KT and CD.
KT – Confusion in obtaining volunteers for kitchen. Sarah has her own list,
CD – Future staff position – Camping fee collector. We do not have one for this year.
d. JD - Mini-set not complete. Ended up with 4 surprise slots for Swannanoa grant recipients.
Isaiah only recipient that will be able to participate. T-shirts (175 ordered) should be ready of Nov.
15. Order based on last year’s sales and ratio used by Austin Lounge Lizards. Need 2 volunteers
for Purly’s workshop.
e. Other details. Ticket prices in newsletter not current (early bird discount reflected). Will
honor $5.00 difference if someone disputes. Try to remember for next year!
Raffle, $5 per ticket, 3 for $10 (or 5 for $20). First ticket drawn, guitar and 2nd drawing for the 1
hour massage. Only one box needed. CF will ask cousin Lisa to put a box together.
CF – Will not change area names of workshop areas for this year and will NOT make a poster.
CF – Banner being made by BumperSticker.com for $75.00.
JD – Has a large newsprint pad that will use for Mini-set list.
CF – Jerry Hagins making programs and I will pick both programs and workshop inserts up from
Fedex Kinkos.
5. Midwinter Festival discussion – big rent increase for DAC.
TW – Increase to over $1000 for Dougherty Arts Center rental. Increase ticket prices – need to
include in application for MWF 2014. $15/$12 member – current ticket prices.
AW – We have two bands. Reed Island Rounders and Double Eagle String Band Same bands
asked every year to donate their time. Only other bands we might get are those that are new to the
area.

6. Do we want to apply to be a Country Dance and Song Society (CDSS) Centennial Tour stop?
(See their e-mail on this.) If so who will complete and submit the application? Not discussed at
meeting.
7. Flipnotics showcase – can the day of the week be moved?
CF - Tuesday night was offered for AFTM Showcase as the night that would be most beneficial for
exposure purposes. Erik Hokkanen’s audience often comes early to Flips to check out the AFTM
performers. Showcases will remain on the FIRST Tuesday night every month for now. If
opportunity exists to change day, will inform the board.
8. Pending business:
a. What level of formality, approval process, and designation of responsibilities does the board
desire for AFTM sponsored concerts, workshops or other events? PENDING.
c. Frequently asked questions (and answers). Send these to Dan. PENDING
d. policy and procedures manual PENDING
Other business?
EP – Proposal for ASBF 2014. James Leva “performance piece”. Scripted performance. Story
telling of Tommy Jarrell, concert and dancing. Cost: $4000 plus travel for 4 people. EP willing to
